Computer Science is the study of computer systems, including the architecture of computers, development of computer software, information processing, computer applications, algorithmic problem-solving, and the mathematical foundations of the discipline.

 

The Computer Science major provides professional education in computer science to prepare the student for graduate study or for a career in the computing field. Students learn concepts and skills needed for designing, programming, and applying computer systems while also learning the theoretical and mathematical foundations of computer science. They have sufficient freedom in the program to pursue other academic interests in the liberal arts, sciences, and engineering to complement their study of computer science. The Computer Science program at SUNY Korea is identical to that at Stony Brook University.

 

Many students prepare for their professional careers through internships at local companies. Computer science graduates are recruited heavily, and career opportunities include developing software systems and/or applications in the areas of computer science such as user interfaces, networks, databases, computer games, cyber security, social networking, smart energy, mobile computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, forecasting, web technologies, medical, communications, satellite, embedded systems, Internet of things, etc. Most find employment as a software engineer in computer industry including startups and other industries such as telecommunication, finance, government, etc.

 

 

History

 

Established in 1969, the Computer Science Department at Stony Brook University is consistently ranked among the top Computer Science research departments. A Gourman report indicated Stony Brook’s undergraduate program was ranked 15th nationwide and 2nd in New York State. The most recent NRC survey ranked it among the top 20 graduate programs in the U.S.

 

The department is the largest unit in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and is among the largest on the campus. Our faculty and students work closely together in an open, collegial atmosphere. The department is active in many of the major research areas in computer science with specialization in Algorithms and Complexity, Architecture and Organization, Big Data, Biomedical Informatics, Computational and Systems Biology, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Assurance and Security, Information Management, Intelligent Systems, Networking and Communication, Programming Languages, Software Engineering, Smart Energy, Systems Fundamentals, Internet of Things, Visualization and more. The department is the primary participant in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), a $230 Million High-Tech Center at Stony Brook and one of a handful in the state of New York.

The Stony Brook University graduate program is consistently ranked within the top 20 of the Computer Science Departments in North America. The program has about 40 faculty and close to 300 graduate students, almost equally divided between Doctoral and M.S. students. Its graduates hold prominent professorships in such universities as Stanford, Yale, Illinois, Texas, and Cornell. Some graduates continue into industry, including prominent positions with the research laboratories of Lucent, AT&T, IBM Yorktown Heights, JPL-Cal Tech, Sony, MERL, and B.B.N. Some have become leaders of professional societies, presidents of distinguished universities, and CEOs of successful companies.

 

SUNY Korea computer science graduate students enjoy the same rich academic atmosphere as their peers at Stony Brook. There is much interaction among the two programs, its faculty, and its students. The courses follow the same syllabus, and all SUNY Korea graduate students spend at least one year on the Stony Brook campus at a certain stage of their academic career.

M.S. Program in Computer Science

 

The M.S. program is designed primarily to train students with professional goals in business, industry, or government, requiring a detailed knowledge of computer science concepts and applications. The program concentrates primarily on applied computer science, emphasizing programming, software development, computer systems, and applications with appropriate theoretical background. Each student is given the experience of working on one or more projects involving analysis, design, evaluation, and/or implementation.

Given appropriate academic standing, enrolled MS students will have the opportunity to participate in what is termed the 1+1 program – a two-year curriculum in which second-year students would pursue their studies on the Stony Brook campus in New York.

 

 

Ph.D. Program in Computer Science

 

The Ph.D. program is for students interested in obtaining academic or research positions in colleges and universities or in government or industrial research laboratories. The program gives students a rigorous and thorough knowledge of a broad range of theoretical and practical research subject areas and develops the ability to recognize and pursue significant research in computer science.

As part of their doctoral studies Ph.D. students will take at least one year research residence at Stony Brook NY to closely work with their chosen academic research co-advisor or collaborators.

POSTECH-Yonsei-SUNY Korea IT Consilience Creative Program (ITCCP)

 

The program is rooted in the premise that unrelated sources can converge to strong conclusions. To achieve this goal, the IT Consilience Creative Program aims to nurture and promote independent and creative thinking in a hands-off, interdisciplinary and fun research atmosphere. It is a place where lab members of all levels loosely interact to exchange quick and fledgling ideas, inspire each other and together engage in a research adventure trip of a life time. Called the SUNY Korea Convergence Research Center, the lab seeks to conduct revolutionary research and it aspires to strongly participate in defining the technologies that will become main-stream in future generations. This inherent principle of convergent research is founded in a host of computer science disciplines, backed by a high-quality educational and research infrastructure. Constantly evolving, the current focus points are:

The SUNY Korea Convergence Research Center has an impressive high-quality computing infrastructure, including

- Hyper-spectral camera equipment that can reveal the invisible light

It is at the core of our mission that students will have opportunities and are encouraged to work on more than one convergence project, driven by their interests. Specific research problems are identified by the student in collaboration with their research mentors.

 

A competitive selection process will add six PhD students each year to the team — three Korean and three non-Korean. This select group of students will be supported through the ITCCP program for three years. The support covers educational costs, including tuition, and provides a monthly stipend to pay for basic living costs and housing in the dorm at no cost. With all expenses taken care of, students can freely focus on their studies and explore creative new ideas without financial difficulties.

 

Students must identify a research mentor within their first year of study. Ideally they would choose one of the resident SUNY Korea faculty members and possibly form a team of mentors by adding another SUNY Korea faculty or a participating faculty member from Stony Brook University, NY. Students are also required to identify specific research ideas they would like to expand on and present a formal research proposal to defend their plan to a committee. This defense will be an invaluable forum for the student to test the intended approach in front of an expert audience and receive stimulating feedback. The students are also required to show a reasonable level of progress throughout their research experience. This progress will be evaluated mainly by the research mentor or the team of research mentors, over the entire course of three years. The remaining period beyond the three years will be supported by the research mentor’s research grants. It is expected that at that time the student has developed an advanced degree of maturity, soon engaging in own independent research and mentoring others.

 

In addition to the research proficiency requirement, students are required to pass all qualification exams within the first year. To complete the well-rounded research experience students will also engage in a residency at the main campus, located in Stony Brook, NY, for a minimum of one year, typically done towards the end of their PhD studies. This will reinforce collaborative research with labs at Stony Brook University. Internships outside Korea are also encouraged and SUNY Korea will provide internship and employment opportunities in collaboration with Stony Brook.
