MFA in Film Graduate’s New Feature Screening at Jeonju Film Festival

Press Releaseㅣ2019-05-02 09:50
Stony Brook University MFA in Film graduate Juhyoung Ra has a feature film screening at the 20th Annual Jeonju International Film Festival in South Korea.

Atlantic City is a full-length feature film that will screen from May 4-9. Ra, who attended the MFA in Film program in Manhattan and graduated in 2017, wrote, directed and edited the film. Stony Brook classmate Amy Gaipa worked as producer on the film, while classmate James Evans served as a script advisor.

The film centers on MK, who immigrated to the United States with his family, only to be abandoned. At a Korean homeless shelter, he receives the help of a pastor. One day in the shelter, MK spots his father “full of misery and intoxication.” MK tries his best, but his father steals money from the shelter and vanishes.

Ra’s short film Encounter (2011) was screened at several film festivals including the Jeonju festival. Another film, Bye, Christina (2015) was also screened internationally.

Magdalene Brandeis, director of the MFA in Film program, said Ra has “an incredible artistic sensibility.” Ra initially pitched the idea to MFA in Film Artistic Director Christine Vachon in the program’s Master Class her first year.

Now in its 20th year, the Jeonju festival is dedicated to alternative and independent films, and has introduced to South Korea the films of Darren Aronofsky, as well as the early works of Béla Tarr.
