On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the SUNY Korea Career Development Center hosted the “AI for Career Decisions” workshop. Led by Dr. Joseph S. Cabuay from the Department of Technology, AI, and Society, this interactive workshop aimed to aid students seeking employment opportunities by exploring how to utilize artificial intelligence when making career decisions.
The workshop led students across a systematic process consisting of four complementary steps: understanding the job, understanding your fit, responding credibly, and keeping human judgement. During the introductory section, Dr. Cabuay started off by stating that “The problem with AI is that if you know it very well, sometimes people use it as a crutch instead of a tool to develop. And that’s a bad thing because when you use it as a crutch, it becomes a crutch forever.”
Throughout this presentation, the need to utilize AI as a tool was constantly stressed. With various hands-on exercises, students were able to understand how to convert weak statements into tangible evidence and how to speak using one’s own voice instead of a machine’s. Before submitting any material assisted by AI, students were encouraged to apply 3 major checks:
While AI can help accelerate the drafting process of a job application, human insight and credible evidence remain essential to a strong application. To conclude, Dr. Cabuay encouraged participants to employ the strategies and techniques from this workshop into their own career decisions throughout the semester.
