SBU Korea - Types of Petition

1. Late Add: Petition to add courses after the last add/drop period. (Petition Fee: $20)
2. Late Withdrawal: Petition to drop courses after the last withdrawal deadline. (Petition Fee: $20)
3. Late Registration: Petition to register for the semester after it has already begun. (Processing Fee: $50)
4. Overload: Petition to take a credit overload if you do not meet the minimum requirements of a 3.0 cumulative GPA. (Petition Fee: $20)
5. Underload: Petition to take a credit underload for a given semester. 

  • For students enrolled in an underload (credit below 12), tuition is calculated based on the number of credits taken. Detailed billing information will be provided by the Bursar’s Office.
  • Students who received approval underload after the 10th class day will be charged at the full-time tuition rate.
  • Students who wish to take underload credits for the upcoming semester should contact the Department Coordinator and submit a petition form. 

6. Repeat Course 3rd Time: Petition to register for the 3rd attempt course. Additional documentation is required. Once the petition is approved, the course will be added on the first day of class, as priority is given to first and second-attempt students. (Petition Fee: $20)
7. Academic Reinstatement: Petition to return to Stony Brook University after suspension under “conditions.” Additional documents, such as a personal statement and future plans, are required. 
8. Scholarship Reinstatement: Petition to reinstate a scholarship for students returning from a leave, or for students whose admission scholarship requirements were not met. 

  • Each petition is thoughtfully evaluated by the Scholarship Committee, with consideration given to the student’s personal circumstances and academic performance. Upon approval, scholarship eligibility may be reinstated.

9. Stony Brook Visit: Petition to postpone or cancel the SBU visit due to extraordinary circumstances. 
10. Others: For requests such as late section/credit changes, waiver of the waiting period, or academic renewal petitions.


FIT Korea - Types of Petition

1. Late Registration: Petition to register for the semester after it has already begun. (Full time: $150, Part-time: $75)

  • Late Registration Fee: FIT bills are only available online via the MyFIT portal; see the [LINK] for details.

2. Overload: Petition to take a credit overload if you do not meet the minimum requirements of a 3.0 cumulative GPA. 

3. Underload: Petition to take a credit underload for a given semester. Without approval, tuition will be billed at the full-time rate.

  • For students enrolled in an underload (credit below 12), tuition is calculated based on the number of credits taken. Detailed billing information will be provided by the Bursar’s Office.
  • Students who wish to take underload credits for the upcoming semester should contact the Department Coordinator and submit a petition form.

4. Academic Reinstatement: Petition to return to FIT after suspension under “conditions.” Additional documents, such as a personal statement and future plans (Use additional paper if necessary to complete the form.), are required.

5. Scholarship Reinstatement: Petition to reinstate a scholarship for students returning from a leave, or for students whose admission scholarship requirements were not met.

6. Others: For requests such as Leave of Absence Extension Request / late section / credit changes, waiver of the waiting period, or academic renewal petitions.

 

[Important Notice]

  • Please ensure that all required sections of the petition form are completed accurately. Students must clearly state the reason for the request in the designated section (Reason for Request) and carefully indicate the type of petition being submitted. 
  • The petition and additional supporting documents should be submitted to your department coordinators.
  • All required supporting documents and processing fees must be prepared in advance.
  • Submission of a petition does not guarantee approval.
