SBU Chorale Sings to the Tune of Diversity
Coming home … wherever in the world home may be. Feeling included and accepted … for whoever you are or wish to become. Diverse voices coming together in song and forming a community of support. These are the values Stony Brook University Chorale Director Shoshana Hershkowitz lives, breathes, creates and shares with her students every way she can and every chance she gets, whether it’s a student conveying his personal reflections on Transgender Day of Remembrance, an Iranian student raising awareness of the violence happening in her home country, or first-generation students sharing their unique circumstances, challenges and joys. First SoCJ Student Wins Overseas Press Club Scholarship
In a milestone for the School of Communication and Journalism (SoCJ), student Viola Flowers won a 2023 Scholar Award by the Overseas Press Club Foundation. Flowers is the first SoCJ student to win the award, which consists of a foreign reporting fellowship with a leading media company or a $3,000 scholarship. “I was shocked by how competitive it was and that I was chosen out of a national applicant pool, but also immensely proud of myself,” said Flowers, a sophomore journalism major from Waterbury, CT. “I pour so much time and energy into my passion because it’s what I love to do and what I feel so strongly about. To have that recognized, and to know that it stands out among such a wide range of applicants, is beyond rewarding.” Click here to read the original article.

Four Faculty Receive Inaugural Excellence in Educational Effectiveness (EEE) Award
The Office of Educational Effectiveness (OEE), the first such department in the history of Stony Brook University, marked a pivotal moment by hosting its first annual all-day Assessment Symposium on November 10, 2022. As part of the Office of the Provost, the new department is tasked with leading campus-wide assessment initiatives that measure both student learning outcomes and administrative outcomes at the institution. To mark the birth of this new office, and the increasing focus on assessment as an opportunity for institutional improvement to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl Lejuez and members of OEE selected four faculty members to receive the inaugural Excellence in Educational Effectiveness (EEE) Award. This award identifies Stony Brook educators who have demonstrated, over many years, a passion for evaluating their own teaching practices by collecting student feedback and data to make improvements and revisions to their curriculum and instruction. Data can include course evaluations, aggregated student course work, or artifacts that demonstrate learning has been achieved and to what degree. Click here to read the original article.

Heart Institute Expands Treatment Options for Patients with Severe Aortic Stenosis
Physicians at the Stony Brook Heart Institute Valve Center have expanded the array of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) approaches with two innovative techniques for treating patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, affects up to 20 percent of older Americans. AS can lead to significant heart problems. For those with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis, the mortality rate within a year can go as high as 50 percent if left untreated. Click here to read the original article.

Researchers’ App to Increase Quality of Life for ALS Patients
Patients suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS, experience limited mobility and communication, leading to less personal freedom and a lower quality of life. However, two Stony Brook University professors are working to advance a multifunctional eye-gaze-based app that can help ALS patients gain back some of their lost independence. According to Fusheng Wang, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), motor disability can be caused by ALS as well as other illness or trauma, including multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injuries and stroke, and muscular dystrophy. How to Have Difficult Conversations at Election Time
College of Arts and Sciences Profs Share Their Expertise With the midterm elections upon us, several faculty members from Stony Brook University’s College of Arts and Sciences share their thoughts on how to best approach difficult political conversations, behave civilly and ethically, and all just get along: Don’t Make It Personal “During elections and beyond, many people damage their relationships with family, friends, and peers over political disagreements,” said Peter DeScioli, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, who conducts research in moral and political psychology. “So I try to caution students that fighting over politics is usually a bad idea, just like other kinds of fighting. Fighting, whether with fists or insults, hurts everyone.” In contrast, DeScioli said, we can debate difficult issues more peacefully and intelligently if we restrain ourselves from trying to insult, blame, and punish each other personally. “Civil discussion means that the debaters agree to focus on the issues, to take turns speaking, and not to stoop to insults and name-calling.” Click here to read the original article.

‘The Bash’ Is Fast Becoming a New SBU Musical Tradition
As the brisk days of autumn roll in, Stony Brook University students were able to appreciate a day of warmth with a one-day, music mini-festival presented on the Staller Steps. The student-run event, known as “The Bash,” is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most unique and lively events on campus, and the positive feedback it has received could place it among well-known campus traditions like the Roth Regatta and Brookfest. Five bands performed: Strange Neighbors, Crooked Arrows, Shining Hours, Big Stuff, and Arahmus Brown. Alongside the main performances, there were also tables set up to advertise the SB Press and sell merchandise from the featured performers. The well-attended event on October 15, held for just the second time, was hosted by WUSB-FM, which is both the campus radio station and the largest commercial free radio station on Long Island. Last spring, in an effort to bring an element of live performance to campus, students within WUSB decided to host the first-ever Bash on the Staller Steps. WUSB often helps provide up-and-coming musical artists with a platform on the radio, so the transition to organizing a live sequence of performances was natural.
