The Ministry of Education of the Korean government encourages SUNY Korea to offer traditional face-to-face courses and discourages the offering of excessive online courses. As a result, SUNY Korea Academic and Faculty Affairs manages the offering of online courses to meet the mandate.
Online Course Categories
Category I — Online courses organized and offered by SUNY Korea SBU.
Students may register and take these courses as part of their regular course load.
Category II — Online courses offered by approved institutions outside of SUNY Korea SBU, as well as, in certain cases, courses offered by the SBU, NY campus.
Online courses taken at SBU, NY campus, while the student’s campus location on SOLAR is listed as SONGDO.
During the official SBU visit period (Fall-Spring), online courses taken at the SBU NY campus will not count toward the credit limit.
Students are responsible for all additional tuition and fees.
Online Course Credit Limit
There is no limit on the number of credits that SUNY Korea SBU students may take of Category I online courses.
There is a maximum limit of nine (9) credits that SUNY Korea Stony Brook students may take of Category II online courses throughout their degree program. Credits exceeding this limit will not be counted toward degree requirements unless a petition is approved in advance.
Procedures
Have a meeting with their department advisor to check the eligibility.
Proceed with course enrollment through the course offering institution.
Petition
Students may petition to exceed the total online course credit limit of nine (9) only in exceptional circumstances. Such petitions must be submitted to the department and will be subject to rigorous review. Approval is required from both the Department Chair and the Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs at SUNY Korea, and is granted only in rare cases.
