SKAP 121: Online Course Policy of SUNY Korea FIT

Preamble

  • The Ministry of Education (MoE) of the Korean government encourages institutions, including SUNY Korea to offer traditional face-to-face courses and discourages the offering of excessive numbers of online courses. As a result, SUNY Korea Academic and Faculty Affairs regulates and limits the number of online courses offered to comply with this mandate. The online courses for students in SUNY Korea FIT programs can be broken into two categories, as follows.
  • SUNY Korea students are primarily subject to the transfer policies of SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York and must also comply with additional SUNY Korea transfer policies, including SKAP 111: Transfer Credit Policy of SUNY Korea FIT. Detailed information on FIT transfer policies is available on the FIT website under TRANSFER CREDITS.

Online Course Categories

Category I — Online courses organized and offered directly by SUNY Korea FIT.

  • Students may register and take these courses as part of their regular course load.
  • No additional tuition is required for full-time students.

Category II — Online courses offered outside of SUNY Korea FIT, including FIT NYC Summer/Winter sessions.

  • Students are responsible for all tuition and fees.
  • Total credits from Category II courses (including online, offline, and exam-based credits such as CLEP) are limited to 6 credits during the AAS degree program. These courses may be taken only after completing at least one semester and before the final semester.
  • The maximum number of transferable credits refers to those confirmed as equivalent after review by the Registrar at SUNY Korea FIT.
  • Students must ensure that approved credits are transferred and reflected on the student’s DegreeWorks page before the end of the final semester. Failure to do so may result in a delay in graduation.
  • Credits beyond this limit are not recognized for the degree, and no exceptions will be allowed.

Policy and Submission Process

Category I Courses

  • There is no credit limit for online courses offered by SUNY Korea FIT.

Category II Courses

  • Students must submit the equivalent of a Course Equivalency Assessment (CEA) Form before taking any Category II course. For online courses, applications must follow the guidelines outlined below.
  • Application must include:
    1. Course Title – Indicate if online (e.g., Course Title (online)
    2. Institution Name and Location
    3. Number of Credits Requested
    4. FIT Course Subject and Number
    5. Any supporting syllabus or course materials to allow evaluation of content, learning outcomes, and credit hours for equivalency

Submission Process for Category II Courses

  • For Category II courses, students must submit the CEA Form and all supporting materials at least four weeks before the start of the semester in which they plan to register for the off-campus course.
  • The Registrar of SUNY Korea FIT will review the submission and communicate the equivalency with FIT NYC. After approval, the student may proceed with taking the course.
  • Submission links and detailed guidelines will be provided separately (e.g., via the SUNY Korea Academics website).
  • For Summer and Winter Sessions, submissions will only be accepted within two weeks after the commencement of the preceding Spring or Fall semester, respectively.
  • The total period during which submissions may be made is limited to the timeframe.

General Guidelines and Student Responsibilities

Registration, Tuition, and Fees
Students are responsible for all registration, tuition, and associated fees for courses taken at other institutions.

Transcripts and Grades

  • Students must ensure that official final transcripts are sent from the transfer institution to the FIT NYC Registrar’s Office once the course is completed.
  • A grade of “C” or better is required for the course to be considered for transfer credit.

Graduation Review
If transfer credit is being used to satisfy final degree requirements, students must request a graduation review via email to fit_registrar@fitnyc.edu.

CEA Form / Supporting Materials

  • Each CEA Form must include a complete course syllabus and any relevant supporting materials.
  • Forms ensure that the course content, learning outcomes, and credit hours are evaluated for equivalency to the SUNY Korea FIT curriculum.

Final Transfer Credit Approval
Final review and approval of transfer credits will be conducted by the Office of the Registrar at FIT NYC. Approved transfer credits are recorded with a grade of “T” and do not affect the student’s GPA.
