The SUNY Korea-Stony Brook programs require one year of study at Stony Brook University (SBU) in the United States. Proof of finances will be required to obtain the necessary visa.
According to the agreement between SBU and the Ministry of Education in Korea, students from SUNY Korea- Stony Brook cannot relocate to the SBU West Campus.
Required SBU Visiting Year and Duration of Stay
Students must attend SBU for two consecutive semesters during their undergraduate studies. Exceptions regarding successive semesters may be given to those who must take leave for Korean military duty.
Students must maintain a full-time matriculation status and cannot take a leave of absence at SBU. Students with extremely exceptional circumstances may petition to take a leave.
After appropriate approval, students will receive an I-20 from SBU to apply for the U.S. F-1 visa. The F-1 visa will be valid for one year without any extension. After a year, students must return to SUNY Korea to continue their studies toward their degrees.
Academic Requirements
Students must follow the SBU visit requirements based on their designated requirement term. *Requirement Term: The semester and year used to determine which academic policies and degree requirements apply to a student. Students can find their requirement term from Degree Works.
Students must satisfy the pre-academic requirements at SUNY Korea by the Spring semester preceding their visit to the SBU home campus.
With department approval, if students do not pass or finish the required major courses at SBU, they may take/must take those courses, or an equivalent, in the Winter/Summer sessions.
SBU Visit Requirements by Department Students must complete the SBU visit requirement prescribed by each department before visiting SBU.
Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
C or higher in WRT 101, AMS 261, AMS 301, and AMS 310 at SUNY Korea

Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
Grade of C or higher in ACC 210, BUS 215, BUS 220, BUS 330, BUS 346, BUS 348, ECO 110, ECO 111, and WRT 102 at SUNY Korea *Note: Students whose catalog year is prior to Fall 2025 may satisfy this requirement with ECO 108.

Must attend SBU in the fall semester immediately after passing the following courses with a grade of C or higher at SUNY Korea: WRT 101, CSE 114, CSE 214, and CSE 215. Must attend SBU during sophomore year or the beginning of junior year. Students who have completed courses beyond CSE 214/215 at SUNY Korea must consult their SUNY Korea CSE Advisor and SBU CSE Undergraduate Program Coordinator before enrolling in classes at SBU.
Students are required to complete four of the following courses at SBU: CSE 216, CSE 220, CSE 303, CSE 310, CSE 316, CSE 320, and CSE 373.
For students matriculating in or after Fall 2025
Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
Must attend SBU during the fall semester immediately after passing the following courses with a grade of C or higher at SUNY Korea: WRT 101, CSE 113, and CSE 214. Must attend SBU during their sophomore year or the beginning of their junior year. Students who have completed courses beyond CSE 113/214 at SUNY Korea must consult with their SUNY Korea CSE Advisor and SBU CSE Undergraduate Program Coordinator before enrolling in classes at SBU.
Students are required to complete three of the following courses at SBU, at least two of which must be upper-division (300 level): CSE 213, CSE 220, CSE 307, CSE 316, CSE 320, CSE 373.
Electrical Engineering
For students matriculating as Freshmen
Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
Must complete following courses at SUNY Korea before visiting SBU: WRT 102, AMS 261, AMS 361, PHY 132, PHY 134, ESE 124, ESE 272, ESE 273, ESE 280, and ESE 305.
Students must complete following courses: ESE 300, ESE 301, ESE 319, ESE 323, ESE 324, ESE 330, ESE 331, and ESE 411 at SBU.
Must complete ESE 224 before or while visiting SBU.
For students in specializations other than Circuit and VLS
For the Communications, Signal Processing, and Networking specialization, complete ESE 306 either before or during the fall semester while visiting SBU.
For all specializations other than Circuit and VLSI, substitute ESE330 and ESE411 with appropriate courses while visiting SBU.

C or higher in WRT 101, PHY 131, AMS 151, AMS 161, and D or higher in PHY 132 taken at SUNY Korea

SBU Visit Policy for Transferred Students
The SBU Visit Policy applies the same to transfer students.
Transfer students may petition for special considerations when academically justifiable. Students should have transferred 24 or more credits to qualify for a petition.
Petition
Students with extremely exceptional circumstances may petition to postpone or cancel their visit to SBU. The petition must be approved by the Department Chair and Dean of SUNY Korea Academic and Faculty Affairs, with the consultation of the relevant SBU office (by the end of March). Students should be aware that postponing their visit may disrupt their academic plan and potentially delay their graduation. Students under exception must consult with their department advisors.
