College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) / College of Business (COB)
Attendance Policy
All students are required to attend every class and arrive on time.
Students with unexcused absences totaling 20% or more of class meetings will receive an F in the course.
Students must report the reason for absences to the instructor in advance or immediately after the absence.
At the end of the semester, the course instructor submits a copy of the attendance sheet to Academic and Faculty Affairs.
Excused Absence
Absences may be classified as "excused" at the discretion of the instructor, and attendance policies may vary by course and instructor.
For an absence to be “excused,” the student must provide the instructor with acceptable documentation (e.g., a doctor’s note for serious illness or a formal letter for official school-related events).
The course instructor may excuse an absence if the documentation satisfies the conditions.
Unexcused Absence Scenarios for F Grades
For 180-minute classes meeting once a week, the 4th unexcused absence will result in an “F”
For 150-minute classes meeting once a week, the 4th unexcused absence will result in an “F”
For 120-minute classes meeting once a week, the 4th unexcused absence will result in an “F”
For 80-minute classes meeting twice a week, the 7th unexcused absence will result in an “F”
For 55-minute classes meeting three times a week, the 10th unexcused absence will result in an “F”
Extreme Emergency Cases
Severe medical reasons with a doctor’s note specifying recommended days of rest (not minor illnesses)
Very important events (e.g., national conferences, official school events, death in the family)
Medical Documentation Requirements
Acceptance of medical documentation is at the instructor’s discretion.
Doctor’s note may be required for an absence to be considered excused.
Documentation must clearly indicate the recommended rest period.
A simple hospital note is not sufficient.
The doctor’s note must be submitted to both the instructor and Academic and Faculty Affairs.
Lateness Policy
Late arrivals, early departures, and extended break may be considered absences.
What constitutes a late arrival, early departure, or extended break will be determined by the instructor, but will typically be of a 10-minute difference.
Responsibility and Coursework Completion
Students are responsible for obtaining all information related to missed lessons and assignments.
Regardless of absences, students are responsible for submitting required assignments by the designated deadline.
Requirements to pass a course are determined by the instructor.
Instructors may issue midterm warnings to students with excessive absences and/or poor academic performance.
Intensive English Center (IEC)
Attendance Policy
Attendance is mandatory for all IEC students, and punctuality is expected. Repeated absences or lateness will directly impact the student’s final grade.
Students must attend every class and must arrive on time.
Any disruptive behavior during class—such as sleeping, refusing to participate, using mobile phones, or turning off the camera—may be recorded as lateness or absence.
Students must notify the instructor in advance if they need to be absent, or immediately after the absence.
Students are responsible for catching up on all missed class content by contacting the instructor. All missed work must be completed and submitted on time upon returning to class.
Excessive absences may result in a grade reduction of one grade point value (e.g., a B will be lowered to a B–).
Students who are absent for more than 40 hours during the session will receive a final grade of “F” and be dismissed from the course.
Excused Absence
Absences may be classified as “excused” at the discretion of the instructor.
For an absence to be excused, students must provide acceptable documentation (e.g., a doctor’s note for serious illness).
Submission of documentation does not guarantee that absence will be excused; the instructor will make the final decision.
Attendance Warning *In each case, the student’s Department Chair and Academic Advisor will be cc’d in the warning email.
12 hours of absences: 1st Attendance Warning
20 hours of absences: 2nd Attendance Warning
30 hours of absences: 3rd Attendance Warning
