The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business, and technology of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for adjunct faculty positions in the Fashion Design program at the FIT at SUNY Korea in Songdo, Korea. The Fashion Institute of Technology, a part of the State University of New York, has been a leader in career education in art, design, business, and technology for over 80 years. With a curriculum that provides a singular blend of hands-on, practical experience, classroom study, and a firm grounding in the liberal arts, FIT offers a wide range of outstanding programs that are relevant to today's rapidly changing industries. Internationally renowned, the college offers two majors, and grants AAS degrees in Korea in Fashion Business Management and Fashion Design, preparing students for professional success and leadership in the global marketplace.
 
Department Statement:

The Fashion Design program provides the expertise students need to develop the skills necessary to become competitive, forward-thinking graduates for positions in the fashion industry and related fields. The program offers a wide range of learning experiences through the rigorous AAS curriculum where they develop critical thinking, strong design aesthetics and technical abilities. Faculty members are industry professionals who draw on industry connections to provide students with an in-depth view of the fashion design industry.
 
Job Description:

The FIT SUNY Korea Fashion Design department is seeking to hire two faculty members with relevant industry experience to fill temporary positions with the possibility of continuance.  Ideal candidates for the technical side will be established fashion designers with various levels of design leadership experience, or have experience as a master patternmaker, master seamstress, or master draper.

For the art side, technical requirements include high-level creative, technical, and pedagogical skills to effectively teach illustration. Key requirements include expertise in hand drawing, an understanding of garment construction, expertise in manual and digital illustration, strong knowledge of fashion history and trend forecasting, and the ability to inspire, mentor, and clearly communicate.

The successful candidate will be knowledgeable of successful fashion practices across a number of current methodologies and must possess strong design development and brand building expertise. In addition, a personal area of strength must be demonstrated, such as research and knowledge of fashion technology and innovation, fashion show presentations or exhibitions, and/or writing curriculum. The successful candidate will work collaboratively to establish and implement a vision that supports the strategic goals of the department and the college.

Ideal candidates for the technical side will demonstrate expertise in the following areas:
•    Conceptual development and technical skills for apparel prototype development.
•    Knowledge of garment development with the ability to guide students in the processes.
•    Ability to translate design ideas into tangible reality through draping or patternmaking.
•    An understanding of fabric types, operating industrial machines and precise machine operations, garment construction, fitting, and finishing techniques

Possible Teaching Courses for technical side: 

The successful candidate should be able to teach one or more of the following Fashion Design Technical courses:
· Sewing Levels 1-2
· Introductory Draping Levels 1-2
· Structured Draping (jackets) Level 3
· Patternmaking Levels 1-2
 
Ideal candidates or the Art side will demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas:

•    Superior fashion drawing, rendering and portfolio presentation skills
•    An understanding of Photoshop/Illustrator digital as they apply to Fashion Design
•    Microsoft Office Suite software proficiency
•    Ability to analyze trend forecasts, consumer behavior, and market data using tools like WGSN, AI, and Excel.
•    Leading academic research to analyze clothing, textiles, design, and culture to develop a Fashion journal


Possible Teaching Courses for art side: 

The successful candidate should be able to teach one or more of the following Fashion Design Art courses:

•    Visual Design Concepts III 2-3
•    Design Collections: Visual Solutions
•    Digital Design: Flats and Floats

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates are required to have six (6) years of professional experience as a fashion designer or the technical equivalent of a master patternmaker, draper, or master sewer with eight (8) years of experience as a senior craftsman. Must be fluent in English, A Bachelor’s degree is required. Candidates are required to present a strong portfolio showcasing their professional work, inclusive of relevant press and/or industry acknowledgments. Excellent English oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

A master's degree is preferred. Three (3) years or more teaching experience in higher education is also preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who possess several or all the above listed qualifications.
